Amazon Prime Video has launched a new spy thriller series, “Butterfly,” starring Daniel Dae Kim as a former U.S. intelligence operative whose past resurfaces to threaten his life and family. The six-episode series, which premiered on August 13, is based on the graphic novels of the same name by Arash Amel.
The show centers on David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim), a highly unpredictable ex-spy living in South Korea who faked his death nine years prior to protect his daughter. His life is shattered when he becomes the target of Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a deadly assassin from the very agency he helped create. The plot is a character-driven thriller that explores complex family dynamics and espionage, drawing comparisons to shows like “Alias.” Piper Perabo, known for her role in “Covert Affairs,” also stars as Rebecca’s ruthless boss, Juno.
“Butterfly” was co-created by Ken Woodruff and novelist Steph Cha. Daniel Dae Kim not only stars but also serves as an executive producer through his company, 3AD, bringing together American and Korean storytellers. The series has received a mixed critical reception, with some praising its fast pace and action, while others have found the plot to be predictable. The show makes extensive use of its South Korean setting, with episode titles named after cities like Daegu and Busan.
Notably, while Adam Devine is not involved in “Butterfly,” search results indicate he is the voice of the main character in the adult-animated comedy film “Fixed,” which also premiered on August 13 on Netflix.
