G-Dragon, Former YG Founder Under Investigation for Copyright Infringement Claims

South Korean singer G-Dragon and former YG Entertainment executive producer Yang Hyun-suk are under police investigation for alleged copyright infringement related to a song dating back more than 15 years. The inquiry, launched by the Seoul Mapo Police Station, follows a complaint filed in November 2024 by a composer who alleges that his original song was used without permission on G-Dragon’s 2010 live album, Shine a Light.

According to police and media reports, the composer, identified as “Mr. A,” claims a track titled “G-Dragon” that he wrote was altered, combined with other music, and released as part of a medley on the album. In response to the complaint, authorities have conducted at least two search-and-seizure operations at YG Entertainment’s headquarters and have questioned individuals connected to the case. The legal complaint also names current YG CEO Yang Min-suk and YG Plus head Choi Sung-jun.

In a statement, YG Entertainment denied the allegations, attributing the issue to a “misunderstanding.” The company explained that two unrelated songs with the same title were used during preparations for G-Dragon’s 2009 solo concert, and that there was no unauthorized use of the composer’s work. G-Dragon’s new agency, Galaxy Corporation, has echoed this stance.

This latest investigation comes after G-Dragon was cleared of drug-related allegations in December 2023. After a high-profile investigation that included testing of his hair, urine, and nails, all of which returned negative results, the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency closed the case without filing charges. Following the clearance, G-Dragon signed with Galaxy Corporation and announced plans to establish a foundation to combat drug abuse.
