Giorgio Armani, Italian Fashion Icon and Billionaire, Dies at 91

Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer who defined an era of understated elegance and built a global fashion empire, has died at the age of 91, his fashion house confirmed on Thursday. He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by loved ones.

Often hailed as “King Giorgio,” Armani’s influence transcended the runway. He was credited with revolutionizing menswear by deconstructing the traditional suit, creating a softer, more relaxed silhouette that became a symbol of modern power and sophistication. This minimalist aesthetic, characterized by neutral palettes and fluid fabrics, reshaped professional and red carpet attire, famously outfitting Hollywood stars from Richard Gere in American Gigolo to countless others at major award ceremonies.

His business acumen was as sharp as his sartorial vision. Born in Piacenza, Italy, Armani initially pursued a career in medicine before shifting to fashion. In 1975, with his long-time partner and architect Sergio Galeotti, he founded the Giorgio Armani S.p.A. brand, famously raising the initial capital by selling his Volkswagen. Galeotti’s business leadership was crucial in the early years until his death in 1985. Armani subsequently took full control, expanding the brand far beyond clothing to include accessories, cosmetics, home furnishings, hotels, and even a basketball team. According to Forbes, his net worth was an estimated $12.1 billion.

The fashion world has mourned the loss of a true visionary. Tributes have poured in from designers, celebrities, and world leaders, with many acknowledging his profound impact on the industry and his commitment to timeless style over fleeting trends. His legacy, built on independence and a dedication to his craft, is expected to be carried forward by his family and long-term collaborators.
