Fans of the supernatural mystery series Wednesday can rejoice as the show’s second season has premiered on Netflix. However, in a departure from the first season’s model, the new season is being released in two parts, with the first half now streaming and the second half scheduled for next month.
Netflix released the first four episodes of the second season on Wednesday, August 6. The remaining four episodes will be available on the streaming service on September 3. This two-part format is a strategic move that mirrors the release patterns of other popular Netflix shows, such as Bridgerton and Stranger Things.
The new season, which was filmed in Ireland after production moved from Romania, sees Jenna Ortega reprising her role as the titular Wednesday Addams. Ortega is also taking on an expanded role as an executive producer for the season. In interviews, she has been vocal about wanting the new episodes to lean more into horror and to move away from the romantic subplots of the first season.
The storyline for season two sees Wednesday returning to Nevermore Academy as a minor celebrity among her peers, a development she finds irritating. The narrative delves into a new supernatural mystery, and expands the roles of Wednesday’s family members, including her mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), father Gomez (Luis Guzmán), and brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), all of whom are now series regulars.
A host of new faces are also joining the cast, including Steve Buscemi as the new Nevermore principal, Barry Dort, and Billie Piper as Isadora Capri, the school’s head of music. Guest stars include Joanna Lumley as Grandmama, Christopher Lloyd in an as-yet-unannounced role, and a much-anticipated cameo from Lady Gaga.
With the first four episodes now available and the second part on the horizon, Wednesday season two promises a darker, more horror-centric narrative, as the show continues to build upon the popular world of Nevermore Academy.
