Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a private meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump this week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. During the meeting, Zelensky requested that the U.S. provide Ukraine with “Tomahawk” long-range cruise missiles, which would enable Ukraine to acquire a weapon system capable of striking deep into Russian territory, with a range that could potentially cover Moscow.
Zelensky stated that acquiring “Tomahawk” missiles would become a key point of pressure to force Putin into serious peace negotiations. In a public interview after the meeting, Zelensky did not explicitly name the system but described his request to the U.S. for long-range strike capabilities.
The “Tomahawk” cruise missile has a maximum potential range of up to 2,500 kilometers, far exceeding the range of the long-range weapon systems currently provided to Ukraine. It is reported that Trump seemed open to the request, telling Zelensky, “I’ll take care of it.” The White House has not yet committed to providing the “Tomahawk” system, and it is said the proposal is under consideration.
