Meta Trims AI Division, Cutting 600 Jobs to Boost Agility

On October 22, Meta announced it is cutting about 600 jobs from its Superintelligence Labs, which has several thousand employees, to make its AI division more agile and responsive. The company said the layoffs would affect the Facebook AI Research (FAIR) department, as well as teams focused on product-related AI and AI infrastructure. The newly formed TBD lab will be unaffected.

Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang said that fewer team members will streamline decision-making and increase the responsibility, scope, and impact of each role. For those laid off, the company is encouraging them to apply for other positions within Meta.

Meta restructured its AI work last month following senior employee departures and poor market reception for its open-source Llama 4 model, forming the Superintelligence Labs. CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally led the aggressive hiring for the new division to revamp Meta’s AI efforts. The Superintelligence Labs includes Meta’s foundational, product, and FAIR teams, as well as the TBD lab, which focuses on developing the company’s next-generation AI models.
