In a surprise announcement at Gamescom Opening Night Live, Game Science, the developer behind the globally acclaimed Black Myth: Wukong, officially unveiled its new project, Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The announcement was accompanied by the launch of the game’s official website, confirming that the new title will be a single-player action RPG set within the same universe of Chinese mythology and folklore.
According to a Q&A on the newly launched website, the studio explained its decision to announce a new project rather than a direct sequel or DLC for Wukong. Game Science stated that they are seeking to “build more distinct game experiences” and “challenge ourselves with bolder features.” The developers have confirmed that, unlike the previous title, players will not be in the role of a monkey, suggesting a new protagonist and gameplay style. The website also confirms that the game is in very early stages of development and that there is no release date or in-game footage available yet. It will be released on PC and “all mainstream console platforms.”
The announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui cements the “Black Myth” franchise as an anthology series, with each installment exploring a different figure from Chinese mythology. This move follows the massive success of Black Myth: Wukong, which sold over 10 million copies in its first three days and is considered a landmark release for Chinese game development.
