Inter Miami Advances in Leagues Cup, Overcoming Tigres Without Messi

Inter Miami secured a 2-1 victory over Liga MX’s Tigres UANL in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, advancing to the tournament’s semifinals. The win came despite the notable absence of star player Lionel Messi, who was sidelined with a physical issue.

Luis Suárez proved to be the decisive factor for the home side, scoring both of Inter Miami’s goals from the penalty spot. The first came in the 24th minute after a handball was called against Tigres defender Javier Aquino. Although Tigres managed to equalize in the second half through Ángel Correa, a second penalty awarded for another handball by Aquino in the closing minutes allowed Suárez to seal the victory for Inter Miami.

The match, held at Chase Stadium, was a tense and tightly contested affair. Despite missing Messi, who did not train with the team ahead of the match, Inter Miami’s coach Javier Mascherano opted for a more defensive-minded midfield with the addition of Rodrigo De Paul. This tactical shift, along with a bit of luck—including a late Tigres shot that ricocheted off both posts—helped the Herons withstand pressure and clinch the win.

Inter Miami, the defending champions of the inaugural Leagues Cup, will now face the winner of the Orlando City vs. Toluca match in the semifinals. The victory marks a significant achievement for the club, demonstrating their ability to win crucial matches even without their most high-profile player on the field.
