A shark attack incident occurred on a beach in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, Australia, on the 6th, where a surfing enthusiast unfortunately died due to severe injuries after being attacked.
John Duncan, the police chief of the jurisdiction where the incident occurred, stated that at around 10 AM local time, a man in his 50s was suddenly attacked by a large shark while surfing with friends at “Long Reef Beach.” A witness said that the victim was rescued back to shore by two other surfers but died from excessive blood loss.
The affected beach has been temporarily closed. Organizations such as Surf Life Saving New South Wales have dispatched motorboats and drones to search for the shark’s whereabouts and urged the public not to enter the surrounding waters. Prior to this, there have been three fatal shark attack incidents reported in Australia this year. Similar incidents are rare in Sydney’s history, with the last one occurring in 2022 and the previous one in 1963.
According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, since 1791, the country has recorded over 1,200 shark attack incidents, with more than 250 of them resulting in death.
