China’s generative artificial intelligence user base reaches 515 million people

The China Internet Network Information Center’s “Report on the Development of Generative Artificial Intelligence Applications (2025)” released on the 18th showed that as of June 2025, the user base of generative artificial intelligence in China reached 515 million, with a penetration rate of 36.5%.

The report was released at the 2025 (6th) China Internet Infrastructure Resources Conference held in Beijing on the same day. It showed that generative artificial intelligence is gradually integrating into the daily lives of various groups in China, with explosive growth in user base and penetration rate. In the first half of the year, the user base of generative artificial intelligence in China increased by 266 million, a growth of 106.6%.

Among all generative artificial intelligence users, those aged under 40 accounted for 74.6%, and users with a college degree or higher education accounted for 37.5%. These two groups are the core users of generative artificial intelligence.

The report stated that as of August 2025, a cumulative total of 538 generative artificial intelligence services have completed registration, and 263 generative artificial intelligence applications or functions have been registered. Generative artificial intelligence has been widely applied in scenarios such as intelligent search, content creation, office assistants, and smart hardware, and is also being actively explored and practiced in fields such as agricultural production, industrial manufacturing, and scientific research.

The report believes that with the continuous optimization of the technical environment, China’s influence in the global artificial intelligence technology field is continuously increasing. As of April 2025, China’s number of artificial intelligence patent applications reached 15.76 million, accounting for 38.58% of the global total, ranking first globally.
