Potential Contract Termination Looms for Kawhi Leonard Amid Alleged ‘Shadow Contract’

On September 9, 2025, American journalist Sam Amick revealed that if Leonard’s “shadow contract” with the Clippers is confirmed, his contract will be terminated.

Amick stated: “If there is solid evidence, then terminating the player’s contract and suspending executives are both possible penalties. If it can be proven that Leonard was not only persuaded to stay but also signed a contract favorable to the team, providing greater salary flexibility, then the player’s contract could be terminated and management could face suspension. This behavior runs counter to the principles system that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has worked to build and undermines the foundation of the league.”

According to previous reports, sources indicated that Leonard signed a “shadow contract” with the Clippers. Leonard’s current contract has two years remaining, totaling $100.3 million. In January 2024, he signed a 3-year, $150 million extension with the Clippers.
