OpenAI has officially launched its highly anticipated new model, GPT-5, marking a significant advancement in the field of artificial intelligence. The release is poised to redefine the capabilities of AI assistants, with the company claiming the model is its “smartest, fastest, and most useful yet.”
The new model, which is available to all ChatGPT users, is described as a “unified system” that seamlessly adapts to user needs. According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is a significant step toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), with CEO Sam Altman characterizing the experience as being like interacting with a PhD-level expert. A key feature is a real-time decision router that intelligently switches between fast responses for simple queries and deeper reasoning for complex problems. This new architecture is designed to reduce the need for users to manually select different models.
Performance-wise, GPT-5 demonstrates state-of-the-art results across several key domains. It boasts improved accuracy in math and health-related questions, with a significant reduction in factual errors and hallucinations compared to previous models. The model also introduces its strongest coding capabilities to date, excelling at front-end generation, debugging large codebases, and creating functional websites from simple prompts. Writing capabilities have been enhanced to be more coherent, personalized, and stylistically aware.
For developers, GPT-5 is now available via the OpenAI API, with multiple tiers offered, including GPT-5, GPT-5 Mini, and GPT-5 Nano, each priced for different workloads. The company is also rolling out GPT-5 Pro, a premium version with enhanced reasoning, to Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers. Microsoft has also announced that it will integrate GPT-5 into its own AI assistant, Copilot.
