OpenAI files antitrust complaint against the tech trinity with the EU

According to The Information, OpenAI has formally raised concerns with the European Union’s antitrust authority on September 24, directly accusing Apple, Google, and Microsoft of hindering fair competition in the AI market and calling for regulatory intervention to break industry barriers.

During the meeting, OpenAI pointed out that the three tech giants have created a “user lock-in” effect through their closed ecosystems and data advantages, severely restricting the development of startups. Google was specifically mentioned, as it builds AI distribution bottlenecks by controlling data access and favoring its own services in mobile devices and search channels; Apple limits third-party AI apps from reaching users due to its closed system; and Microsoft strengthens its competitive advantage in the AI field by relying on ecosystem resources. OpenAI emphasized that the monopoly of key data and distribution channels would suppress technological innovation and reduce market competition.

Currently, this request has not escalated into an antitrust lawsuit. The European Commission has not publicly responded, only stating that it refuses further comments. OpenAI’s move aims to break the information flow dominance of the giants through regulatory power. Industry analysis suggests that if regulation intervenes, it may push platforms to open data interfaces and reshape the competitive rules of the AI industry.
